DIV | A bill splitting app that stresses aesthetics and simplicity

For my capstone project, I was tasked with making the mundane process of bill splitting into an experience that users would actually look forward to taking part in. By utilizing various research methodologies that included, interviews, surveys, guerrilla testing sessions, and monitored user tests, I was able to ascertain what users were looking for in an app that helped them complete this task. Finally, using Xd, Illustrator, and Miro, I was able to create user journeys, personas, empathy maps, affinity maps, wireframes, and prototypes to come up with a unique and visually pleasing app that helps take the arguing out of settling up at the end of a great meal.

The Process

Utilizing Design Thinking, I completed various steps in order to define a problem and solve it. Why are bill splitting apps so boring and how do we make users want to actually use one? In order to accomplish this, I conducted surveys, user testing, heuristic analysis, competitor analysis, persona creation, and more.

Understanding the Problem

By creating and disseminating surveys, conducting interviews, preforming heuristic and competitor analysis, and creating an affinity map, I was able to pinpoint what our issues were and the initial steps we needed to take in order to solve them. These steps revealed opportunities, constraints, and a basic framework for which to build our product on.

Understanding the User

By creating personas and empathy maps, I was able to better understand who I was designing for and empathize with their wants for a bill splitting app as well as their frustrations with previous iterations they may have used.

The Design

Combining all of the aforementioned processes, I created a warm, simple, and approachable app that allows our users to complete a task they normally want to skip.
